Epiduo

What is Epiduo?

2It’s often hard to trust an acne medication that says its going to clear your acne when no other can, because let’s be honest, we’ve all been through this drill a hundred times before and it seems that everything works the same. One difficult thing to overcome is the fact that almost all the medications have one or more of the same ingredients, so how can you tell which one will be right for you? Epiduo is, once again, the supposed cure-all for acne. Like many prescription acne medications this is a gel that is designed to be used once daily, preferably after you wash your face.

Ingredients

Epiduo has two active ingredients. Whether these two ingredients are more effective when combined may or may not be true, as there is little evidence of this claim. The first ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient found in most acne treatments, especially those that are dermatologist-prescribed. Benzoyl peroxide reduces propionibacteria acnes, or more commonly referred to as P. acnes, by allowing oxygen to get into pores. Because P. acnes cannot thrive in an oxygen-rich environment, when oxygen is introduced and bacterias are eliminated the number of breakouts you experience will also be diminished. Benzoyl peroxide is extremely effective when battling acne, but it doesn’t do so without consequences. Side effects that you will likely experience are dryness of the skin, flaking, burning, or a rash. Sun exposure, whether to real or artificial sunlight, should be limited as your skin might become more sensitive. Benzoyl peroxide may also bleach hair or colored fabrics and caution should be used.

Adapalene is the other major ingredient used in this product and it, too, is often used in acne treatments. Adapalene  stops acne from forming underneath the skin by clearing clogged pores, so essentially it helps get rid of breakouts before they start. It may cause side effects similar to benzoyl peroxide, so some dryness and itching should be expected.

Pros

  • Epiduo can be used at any time of day, only once a day
  • Customer reviews said they saw significant results after only 7 weeks
  • Contains two well-known ingredients for fighting acne

Cons

  • Acne will most likely get worse before it gets better
  • The majority of customer reviews complained it didn’t prevent acne
  • Extremely expensive when not covered by insurance

Conclusion

Expect to see a number of the same results typical for many acne treatments. Expect to see the same side effects, results in the same amount of time, and to use this product the same amount of times per day as countless other acne medications. Can you tell where we’re going with this? This product appears to be your typical, run-of-the-mill acne medication. Without insurance you may be spending hundreds of dollars for this product, so wouldn’t you want to see extraordinary results for that kind of money? That’s not to say that this product won’t work for you. But with only two active ingredients, both of which are used in almost every other skin treatment, we would be lying if we said it was worth it.
